Beginning in 2022, a growing group of Artist/Mothers in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas has come together to show our work. Each exhibition seeks to increase visibility and celebrate the often-unseen role of motherhood and maternal labor.
We continue to explore both shared and individual experiences of mothering and motherhood and the different stages of the mothering experience, from the all-encompassing demands of parenting a newborn, to being the person our young adults can always count on. These common threads come through our artwork in a wide variety of materials and processes, including photography, textile sculpture, ceramics, mixed media collage, painting, video, and performance.
We are diverse in our age ranges, life experiences, stages of mothering, and outlooks. Caretaking can often be an isolating experience, so we focus on supporting one another in collectively organized exhibitions and ongoing critiques. We also create ties with our audiences by holding workshops, performances, and family-friendly brunches. We focus on meeting each other where we are in our own practices, and have used our annual exhibitions to experiment with new ways of bringing art into the world where we live.
The Flock Artist group came together through a project of what was then called the Artist Mother Network. Through our collaboration, the artists in our group build bridges among a wide range of networks in the Pittsburgh area. These connections include Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Shiftworks, Sibyls Shrine, the Pittsburgh Glass Center, Silver Eye Center for Photography, and Fiber Arts Guild of Pittsburgh. Artists have recently exhibited at The Mattress Factory, Concept Gallery, Manchester Craftsmen's Guild, SPACE Gallery, and The Tomayko Foundation; and have completed residencies at Contemporary Craft and Brew House Distillery Program.Â
